Maximus escapes death but his family is brutally massacred by Commodus' men. Maximus is then forced into slavery to become a gladiator where he begins his journey of revenge to kill Commodus. In the film, Maximus portrays multiple leadership skills for him and his man to best survive the gladiatorial games and win over the crowd. Maximus' three main leadership skills were building trust, setting an example for others to follow, and building team cohesion and pride. When Maximus first enters the Gladiator games in his first encounter, he encounters overwhelming odds and still manages to demonstrate courage and tactics. This proved to the other men that he knew what he was doing and how to best defeat the enemy. In this, the other men began to follow Maximus and listen to his orders which led to their first victory. The way Maximus proved to build trust among his warriors was by always protecting them and trying to keep them safe. He did this in one of the gladiatorial battles by breaking a fortified position to save his fellow comrades. This instilled confidence within his group, which led to building cohesion and pride among the warriors. Throughout the film, you started to see this slowly develop as the film went on. You start to see Maximus and his warriors become less serious with each other and start cracking jokes, laughing and becoming a brotherhood. This helped them during their battles in the gladiatorial games because they knew they could count on each other and had something to fight for. Most of Massimo's supervision techniques were effective but not all leaders are perfect and there were a few moments during this film where Massimo was at his weakest.
