Topic > My Personal Experience with Yoga

I was reintroduced to yoga through a friend of a friend. He was an old man from Bermuda who I knew only as Swami. He happened to spend time with us in Kenya at my friends house in Nairobi. My friend Job and I listened to Swami tell us about his trips to East Africa to sunbathe. He did yoga in the sun. It energizes him just like what exercise will do to you. It gets its energy through the sun. We thought it was strange and that someone would travel the world just for the sun. Every morning, before sunrise, Swami was frail and a little dull, just like the seventy-five year old he was. As soon as the sun rose, he was full of strength and could walk for miles and never seemed to get tired. Say no to plagiarism. We evaluated it as a group and overall decided it wasn't our thing. We were traveling back and forth as artists back then. We thought yoga would make us extremely flexible and with our acrobatics we thought we would be more prone to injury. Mostly, though, we thought yoga was for women. However, the days we sat and talked with Swami about the difference between his country and other countries he had traveled to as we discussed the challenges of our lives as young men in Nairobi. Swami listens and tells us that yoga would be our best bet. That in yoga we will discover our strengths and learn to convert our passion into profits. He didn't stop there, he basically took us to a yoga studio. The studio was at Parklands, the Africa Yoga Project. This was a long way from where we were staying. He introduced us to the administration, presented our case, and shortly thereafter a teacher was sent to our community. As we said goodbye to Swami, we promised to try yoga, especially from me, as I was curious about yoga now that Swami spoke about it so intimately. The teacher came to our training room in our community. We set up lessons once a week to start with. We went on for almost a month and were getting better and better as a team and it was a lot of fun to learn. For a long time I thought yoga was "girly." I was very wrong, and coming from a background of intense physical practice, you would think that yoga would be easy for me. Yoga kicked my ass. I was sweating and shaking in "downward facing dog" like I had never seen before. It was amazing to see and discover so much about my body. The most interesting thing was that, I was thinking of slowly transitioning into teaching, I just didn't know how to go about it and that yoga would be my field, it was like a dream come true for me. It is with yoga that I became truly aware of my contribution, in how I showed up in life and how that shaped or determined the kind of results I achieved in life..
