Topic > Native Americans and Colonization: Pocahontas Movie Review

The discovery of the New World was just the beginning of new things and the end of some old things. After the discovery of the New World, outsiders benefited, and the New World quickly became a modern colony, especially North America. The animated film titled ''Pocahontas'' talks about colonization, modernization, self-identification, nationalism and also assimilation of a culture through the name of modernization. In reality, Pocahontas was a real Native American who lived between 1596 and 1617 and married English men named John Rolfe. She was the daughter of Powhatan who was the supreme chief of all the Tsenacommacah tribes. The term tribe is used in different ways to specify different types of social organization. In some cases, it refers to a group of local bands or villages with common origins, culture and language. It also sometimes refers to groups of peoples spread over a larger area but who cooperated politically in what is called a confederation. In still other cases, tribe refers to a single village. They also say they are workers of the Virginia Company, which is important to mention because it indicates that England is industrialized, so they are coming to the New World because they need more human energy, sources , raw materials, etc. Furthermore, this is directly linked with colonization. Colonialism is a powerful force that has influenced American Indian cultures in many ways (Horse, 2005). However, no culture remains static. I think there is an important detail behind the scenes: there is a sailor who is not British. He is Scottish. No one hides this, especially children can easily understand what is meant behind that scene, but this could mean that England will also conquer the New World as it did before with Scotland. Also, this line ''You can't fight with the Indians without John Smith.'' shows their intention towards the Indians/Native Americans. Also, as it is shown in the cartoon, Native Americans lived in tribes and in the cartoon it is also mentioned that there are conflicts between tribes, the natives say that they win their battle with the Massawomeck. Furthermore, in the cartoon the natives were shown to be more spiritual, more peaceful and more dependent and respectful of nature. For example, Pocahontas talks to the tree called the grandmother's willow and also receives advice from that tree, the song that the natives sing at the beginning shows how much respect they show towards the land. On the other hand, Governor Ratcliffe and his servant call the natives “savages.” This shows that they see the wild Indians in their eyes. Furthermore, in the eyes of the Indians, they are savages. There is also orientalism in the cartoon. Orientalism according to Friedman (1992) is a product of the Western practice of self-identification in a hegemonic space in which the other is silent. In the cartoon, England represents the hegemonic one, while the silent one is what the English called "savages", i.e. the natives. When the ship arrived in the New World, while the tribe was having an emergency meeting and one of the tribe members said that "they have hair on their faces like dogs" it is important to mention this. We know that Indian men cannot have facial hair, which also indicates the difference between them and visitors. The visitors are not men like them. Also, there is a wise old man, Kekata, in the tribe and all the members of the tribethey believe his words. They're counting on him. Kekata while performing a ritual said "Strange beastly bodies that shine like the sun and weapons that enchant fire and thunder", "consuming everything in their path" on the visitors. This shows the Indians' look at these visitors. In reality for them they are invaders. As soon as the English ships came ashore they began to dig and devastate the forest without hesitation. This also shows their intentions towards the land. As John Smith tried to learn more about the land, he was confronted by the Pocahontas and when he spoke to her in English she listened with her heart, as Grandma Willow had said before, she suddenly understood and began to speak in English. This actually shows how strongly the natives are linked to their tradition, which also points to spiritualism. When the natives and visitors confronted each other, the battle took place. Furthermore, an Indian man was shot, so the chief decided to fight these invaders not alone but with every village in his nation. He told Kokoum "Send messengers to every village in our nation." The word “nation” is an important concept to talk about. Friedman states (1995) that ethnic identity is a form of nationalism and that the nation is a modern invention. Ethnic identity, however, is not natural and innate, nor the product of an ancient tradition; it is socially constructed (Friedman, 1995). Nationalism is a theory of political legitimacy, which requires that ethnic boundaries should not cross political ones... It follows that a territorial political unit can become ethnically homogeneous only if it kills, or expels, or assimilates all non-nationals. while, Pocohantas said "wild". Then he got offended and:J.Smith:''It's just a term for uncivilized people. What I mean is...''Pocahontas: ''What you mean is not like you.'' Then Pocahontas starts singing a song and explains how he claims to know and see everything, he is the civilized one but Pocahontas says in her song who then doesn't know how there are so many things. I think this song explains how natives see these people. Even how they are different from them. Furthermore, there is no monolithic American Indian entity. The identity of an American Indian is highly personal. Pocahontas sings: You think I'm an ignorant savage and you've been so many places I guess that's the way it is. But still, I can't see if I'm the savage (as she points to her gun) How can there be so much you don't know You think you own whatever land you land on (they're actually trying to take over the land) The land is just a dead thing you can claim (emphasizes that visitors/invaders show no respect for the land) But I know that every rock, tree and creature has a life, has a spirit, has a name... John Smith told Pocahontas that they will show you how to use this land correctly. Furthermore, he adds that they will show them how to do things the right way, basically how to be civil. The first Americans, in fact, went through periods of deurbanization and reurbanization at various times in their history (Forbes, 1998). In reality, what the natives are trying to do is assimilate them. Cultural assimilation is the process in which a minority group or culture comes to resemble a dominant group or to take on the values, behaviors, and beliefs of another group. Native American cultural assimilation was an assimilation attempt by the United States to transform Native American culture into European-American culture between the 1790s and 1920s. In many ways, Native Americans assimilated into the dominant culture. Native American identity is multifaceted (Horse, 2005). Many issues or elements (such as ethnic nomenclature, attitudes00040
