There was a situation where we had an epidemic of urinary tract infections. While most nurses emphasized hand washing and proper perineal care, one of the managerial nurses had her BSN. took it a step further. Analyzed data related to urinary tract infections. By taking into account who the primary caregivers were for those residents, she was able to track down caregivers who were most likely not providing adequate perineal care and offered them one-on-one in-service training in addition to maintaining the entire facility. Reviewed and amended the facility's UTI policy and procedure and then educated all staff on the revised plan of care with follow-up schedules to ensure compliance. Implemented established standards of care for everyone to prevent UTIs and also for those with signs/symptoms of UTI. In the 3 quarters following implementation of the revised ICU policy and procedure there was not a single ICU in the facility. This certainly improved the result
