Topic > Transitioning from an innocent child in The Boy in Stripes...

Children have often been seen as innocent, and innocent might be a nicer way of calling them naive. Because children's lives are so worry-free, they don't know how to go from being a child to a teenager. Their lack of knowledge can be a big part of their growing pains, which could be difficult years for many. In books like The Boy in the Striped Pajamas the story is told from the point of view of a young boy, so we can get a full view of how innocent he is. In this book the writer shows the reader firsthand how a child viewed the Holocaust and how his innocence cost him his life. Then in books like The Perks of Being a Wallflower Charlie is a teenager who is struggling with the transition from being a child to becoming a teenager. In this book the writer takes a first-hand look at how difficult the transition into adolescence can be. Charlie has a lot of trouble in this book; he is looking for his identity and how to integrate. In the journal entry titled Innocence and Childhood the writer begins by comparing children to lambs. “The lamb, therefore, being so generally recognized as the emblem of innocence, while it is also the universally accepted attribute of childhood, it is no wonder that Rubens, in the allegorical picture we engrave, should have symbolized the innocence and purity of childhood on the part of a group of playing children to whom the genius of innocence presents the lambs.” (Page 35, Read). The article states that the lamb is considered one of the most innocent creatures known to man. In ancient times lambs were often used as sacrifices because they were considered pure and innocent. People thought that sacrificing something pure would lead to... center of paper... breakdowns throughout the book and some might say this was caused by what happened to him as a child. Once he discovered this absurd fact, asked for help and realized that he didn't have to handle his problems alone, he finally found himself. Children are not really prepared when it comes to becoming teenagers. Their lack of responsibilities as children can lead to a more difficult transition, which could lead to a series of difficult years for the person. Take for example the case in which Bruno had not entered the camp and survived. He would later realize that he had lost his best friend in the Holocaust, a cause of which his father was a part. This would have been very traumatizing and would have affected the way he was as a person. Sometimes the child's innocence is the determining factor in how easy the transition from childhood to adolescence is.
