Arthur Ashe's introduction to Dr. Johnson had a snowball effect that began when Ashe broke racial barriers by being the first African American to play in the Maryland men's championship. Ashe's search for competition led him to move to St. Louis, Missouri, where the name Arthur Ashe began to spread across the nation. Accepting a full scholarship to UCLA, Arthur Ashe earned many accolades during his time there and further developed his ability to balance a busy schedule. Arthur Ashe has spread education and awareness on important topics and issues by founding various institutions and organizations and sponsoring life-changing events and campaigns. By opening a door of opportunity for minorities by setting an example throughout their lives, minorities feel more comfortable in their perspectives. Even though Arthur Ashe is no longer alive, he continues to inspire people today and serve as a role model. Arthur Ashe lived a short but significant life. He touched everyone around him, especially by wearing “the burden of race…as a cloak of dignity,” showing the world what can be achieved with hard work and dedication.
