The propaganda machine set up by the Bush administration has channeled many lies regarding the Jessica Lynch story. The media, in turn, reproduced and repeated his story excessively. These numerous lies were later published in a Washington Post article, in which Krakauer notes that:Thanks largely to the details revealed for the first time in this article, as well as the dramatic video of the rescue released to the media by the Army, Jessica Lynch has dominated the scene. news for weeks. The details of the accident provided by military public affairs officers created an absolutely compelling story that television, radio and print journalists found irresistible: a small, blond supply clerk at a flea market village in West Virginia falls into an ambush in Iraq and fearlessly mows down masked Fedayeen terrorists with her M16 until she runs out of ammunition, whereupon she is shot, stabbed, captured, tortured and raped before finally being wrested from her barbaric Iraqi captors during a daring raid by part of American commandos. (207-208) Krakauer admits that the article states that no verification of the details surrounding Jessica Lynch's story was done, but this was largely ignored (208). It seems the administration has been just as good at covering its own ass as it has been at manipulating the general public. This can be seen in the disclaimer in the Washington Post article. The article states that "Pentagon officials said they had heard 'rumors' of Lynch's heroic acts but had not had confirmation" (qtd. in Krakauer 208). They knew that the truth about Jessica Lynch would come out eventually, and as long as the lies had the desired effect; they didn't care. The real story of what happened to Jessica Lynch is much less extreme. As Krakauer points out... halfway through the document... if we supported the war in Iraq and kept our troops there, so much the better. As illustrated by Krakauer, “Bin Laden viewed the invasion of Iraq as an enormous gift from President Bush – a 'rare and essentially precious' opportunity to spread jihad” and that “the American occupation was fueling even more Muslim anger more than the invasion of Afghanistan." had, inspiring crowds of Arab men to join the ranks of al-Qaeda” (255). The Bush administration's treatment and turning the stories of these heroic soldiers into a propaganda vehicle for its own ends has been abhorrent. I feel disgusted that they use people and lies to support their unjust war, and their war must have been truly unjust if they had to go to such extremes to support it. It is tragic that the people of the United States and other countries have been subjected to this type of betrayal.
