A socialization agent is something that affects you and therefore society as a whole. There are many different socialization agents. The four most important agents of socialization are family, school, peer groups and the mass media. These agents of socialization influence almost everything and every aspect of life. From how you think to what kind of music you like. Family has a major impact on our lives. From the moment you were born, your family taught you right and wrong. We get our religion, values, gender roles, language and customs from our families. We gain our status in society through your family's connection and wealth which can later determine job opportunities in life. Even as we grow up and begin to develop our own values, beliefs, and opinions, the beliefs and opinions about family values that were instilled in you since you were little never truly go away. Family is the first socialization we experience. Without family, we “Socialization is the process of learning one's culture and how to live within it; how people adapt ideas about social roles from other members of their society” (Macionis 2013:62). In Besty Lucal's (1999) article “What It Means to Have a Gender,” she states that “We learn to read people's gender through learning what traits each gender signifies culturally.” Lucal tries not to gender, but sometimes she has to. Gender roles are learned. When Lucal goes to the bathroom she doesn't want to be mistaken for a man so she tightens her shirt to show her breasts. Although Lucal doesn't deal with gender, he still knows what is considered feminine and masculine. She learned gender roles through family and school. Teachers have different expectations regarding girls' and boys' behavior at school. They may encourage and praise girls who behave formally, but when they are rowdy they may be punished more than boys would be if they misbehaved. Schools may also have different uniforms for girls
