In the past there have been stories invented from the depths of the minds of writers, describing what they know and what could be. However, it seems that there are always victims due to the cutting words that have been hurled at the world. “A Wagner Matinee” is no exception due to the reference to Nebraska and its occupants. Nebraskans believed that Cather, the author, was intentionally insulting them, but Cather claimed that it was a tribute to the pioneer lifestyle. I would say that the story is really a tribute to the pioneer lifestyle through three main ideas of the story: Aunt Georgiana's sacrifice, Clark's way of living as a child, and Aunt Georgiana's survival in the West. Aunt Georgiana played the piano but had to give up her love of music to cook and clean for her family and work as a laborer when she moved west.
