The Fall of Okonkwo The apple never falls far from the tree. In the book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Okonkwo, the main character despised being like his father. His father had died when Okonkwo was very young. Even though in the end he was exactly like his father when he hangs himself. Okonkwo is an evil man who is shown when he kills the messenger at the Igbo meeting. He absolutely hates his son Nwoye for joining the European church. Okonkwo ultimately fails when he returns to Umuofia and no one supports him in the rebellion against the Europeans. Okonkwo failed when he could not convince anyone to rebel with him.A. The Europeans had begun to take over.1. “On a market day in Eke a small group of fugitives arrived in our town. Most of them were children of our land whose mothers had been buried with us. But there were also some who came because they had friends in our city, and others who couldn't think of anywhere else to run. And so they fled to Umuofia with a painful story,” (138). The village of Abame had been wiped out. The Europeans used Eke market day as a cover to penetrate below and destroy it from within. Europeans were behind the attack, but the people of Umuofia gave them land to build a church in the Wicked Forest.2. “The missionaries had come to Umuofia. There they had built their church, won a handful of converts, and were already sending evangelists to the surrounding towns and villages" (142). The Europeans brought down the lives of the Igbos around them by turning each other against each other. Europeans welcomed many people into their church, including the marginalized. The Igbo would have no chance of rebelling against European colonization if they did not unite. They need someone who is... middle of paper... died a dishonorable death like his father.2. “Okonkwo's second wife had merely cut some leaves to wrap some food, and she said so. Without further discussion, Okonkwo gave her a sound beating and left her and her only daughter crying” (38). Okonkwo beat his wife and was very cruel to the rest of his family. Unoka had beaten his family a lot, just like Okonkwo had done. Okonkwo had killed one of his sons, Ikemefuna, and beaten his other son for joining the Christian church. They both did stupid things to their families for stupid reasons. Conclusion: When Okonkwo returned, no one rebelled with him, so he failed to drive the Europeans out of Umuofia. Okonkwo did what he tried not to do, that is, like his father. When one religion rises, the other must fall to maintain balance, your people must be united to be a strong force, otherwise everything will fall apart.
