Topic > Analysis of Joan's understanding of family resilience...

The family is the fundamental group of people that transforms each individual into a social being and shapes each person into a being that adapts to the various changes that may occur in their life. It helps develop a person's skills and attitude in relating to other people. If it were not for family, growing and developing oneself is a difficult and almost impossible task to accomplish. In Joan Patterson's article, known as Understanding Family Resilience, she highlighted various information and explanations on how a family responds and how they should choose to act during times of adversity, or also known as family resilience. It is defined by McCubin, H and McCubin, M. as “characteristics, dimensions and properties that help families to be resistant to disruption in the face of change and adaptive in the face of crisis situations”. Since change happens daily and is completely inevitable, a family's trait of being flexible in adapting is necessary. Events that can trigger changes are various crises and challenges or internal and external forces. Such events that occur and are experienced by the family can lead most families to become hopeless and disoriented. In Patterson's work, a clear explanation and citation of various cases to demonstrate that such unfortunate events that could lead to disorganization of a family can be avoided and used as an opportunity to further strengthen the relationship established in the family.“ Family Stress Theory emphasizes the active processes in which families engage in balancing family demands with family capabilities as these interact with family meanings to arrive at a level of family adjustment or adaptation” (Patterson, 1988, 1989, 1993). In order for a family to be resilient, it is necessary for......middle of paper......der to overcome the stress experienced by the entire family. Constantly remain strong and support each family member through changes that may occur in response to internal and external forces. In short, developing a resilient family does not depend solely on those family members, each has a significant role to play in order for a family to cope with the internal and external stress it encounters. The article is really helpful in most situations that Filipino families are experiencing right now. It would not only guide them, but also shape those families to become stronger and have higher hopes and goals in life. Metaphorically, Understanding Family Resilience is similar to a guide that families must follow to have a stronger relationship, not only with their family members but also with those in their environment..
