I. SUBJECT Animal Farm is a novel about animals developing their own society and the abuses of power that result. The story is set on a fictional farm in England, Manor Farm. The novel begins when the owner of the farm, Mr. Jones, falls into a drunken sleep. The animals then gather in the stable where a boar, Old Major, gives a speech to his animal companions about the dream he has: that one day all animals will be free from the tyranny of man and in perfect camaraderie. Two pigs, Napoleon and Snowball plot to drive Mr. Jones away from the farm. Together with the other farmyard animals they succeed, but the larger conflict is revealed, as Snowball and Napoleon fight over the distribution of power. Over the years, Napoleon and Snowball engage in many disputes regarding running a successful farm. Snowball sets up committees to educate the other farm animals while Napoleon is not interested, he thought that training the young should take priority over the education of an adult animal. He secures a group of nine puppies and takes them under his wing. As the years passed, Napoleon and Snowball continued to clash. Their most explosive argument occurred over Snowball's idea of building a windmill. When the time came to vote to approve the construction of the windmill, Napoleon let out a strange yelp and the nine dogs he had trained came out of hiding. The ferocious attack dogs chased Snowball away from the farm. With Snowball gone, Napoleon gained what he had always wanted, complete control of Animal Farm. Under Napoleon's guidance, he and the other pigs became more and more human-like. At the end of the novel, Napoleon is playing cards with a group of humans in Mr. Jones' former home. While common animals looked through the window… in the center of the card… two legs refers to a human being and in the case of four legs it refers to an animal. This reification says that all the animals had a rebellion built within them "The rebellion ran across the countryside" (46.)IV GENREThe main genre of Animal Farm is a fairy tale. A fable is “A short story told to convey a moral. The characters are often animals, but sometimes inanimate people are central” (Harmon 467 68). In Orwell's Animal Farm the main characters are animals and the reader learns that when there is a leader with an excessive amount of animals it will lead to corruption. Animal Farm can also be classified as an Allegory subgenre. An allegory is “A form of extended METAPHOR in which objects, people, and actions in a NARRATIVE are equated with meanings found outside the narrative itself” (14.) In Animal Farm everything symbolizes something.
