A group of people risked their lives to gain equality for African Americans in the South. The Freedom Riders were a group of about 13 people. Most of them were African Americans, but there were always some white-skinned people in the group as well. There was no established leader for the Freedom Riders. The Freedom Riders traveled on interstate buses in the southern United States. The South was called the most segregated part of the United States. The main goal of the Freedom Riders was to desegregate and become “separate but equal.” They had also decided to challenge the Jim Crow laws. The Freedom Riders received a little help from two court cases: Irene Morgan v. Commonwealth of Virginia and Boynton v. Virginia. These court cases determined that it was unjust to impose segregation on buses. This made things easier for the Freedom Riders. Just because the buses were desegregated didn't make things any easier for the Freedom Riders, even though they were harassed, beaten, and called extremely rude and derogatory terms. The Freedom Riders took an alternative approach to protesting. The Freedom Riders did not use any violence. This brought a question to mind: wondering what the Freedom Riders' strategies were and how effective they were in the South. Were they successful? The Freedom Riders used strategies such as Sit INS in local bars, nonviolent protests and Montgomery bus boycotts, and lack of support from officials. The Freedom Riders were very successful in their attempts to decimate segregation in the South. One of the strategies used by the Freedom Riders was sit-ins. Sit INS is an action defined as one or more people occupying an area to protest. They simply sat in a segregated bar or lunch counter. The Freedom… at the center of the card… used local authority policing. All in all the Freedom Rides played an important role in the success of the civil rights movement. The Freedom Riders were one of the few groups to enter and confront the segregated South. Their historic and extraordinary actions are an inspiration to those living today. The civil rights movement was very successful with the help of the Freedom Riders. It was enough to see African Americans putting their lives in danger and whites using them as punching bags. Lastly, racism still exists today and Bull Connors still exists too. God created everyone in his image, so we are all equal. Everyone should be treated equally. It's very sad to see the Freedom Riders leave with very serious injuries, but that's what they had to do. The Freedom Riders are an inspiration to all living today.
