Children of working mothers versus stay-at-home mothers and their effects Looking back in the past there have been women who have fought for equal rights throughout the United States America. includes the right to work or stay at home with your children. Since women started working, controversy has spread over mothers who work and those who stay at home with their children. One concern is what differences, if any, there are between children raised by stay-at-home moms and working moms. This includes effects on their children emotionally and academically. In today's world women find themselves and their choices are under scrutiny. “With more women now in the workforce than ever before, fewer children are being raised by stay-at-home mothers and more are spending extended hours in child care facilities” (Working Mothers: Cognitive and Behavioral Effects on Children, P75). This is a drastic change from women who were taught that their job in life was to raise their children at home. Today these women are the minority and a study has been done that their children do not benefit from them being at home. This is a big change from when people thought that children of stay-at-home mothers thrived in that environment. “More than half of mothers with young children work in the United States today, up from 30% in the 1970s” (American Academy of Pediatrics, 1999). This was research conducted in 1999 and 2007: “Seventy-one percent of American mothers with children under the age of eighteen are in the workforce, meaning they are employed or looking for work (Health Researches and Services Administration, 2007). There are many reasons why women continue to work once their children are... middle of paper... staff are able to stimulate a child with educational tools such as toys and games, most parents has less experience with these types of tools and therefore the child will not benefit from staying at mother's home. Many studies have found that children of working mothers tend not to suffer from antisocial behavior or stress-related problems differently than those of non-working mothers. However, they found that children of working mothers had less stereotypical attitudes about gender roles and felt that their mothers were more competent. An important decision that a woman encounters during her life is to become a working mother or a stay-at-home mother. In some situations, stay-at-home mothers believe that being a mother has been the most important part of their life, while working mothers believe that work is their main concern and that family is an added advantage..
