RegulationsRegulations surrounding food trucks can vary greatly depending on your location. They must meet many codes and regulations similar to those adopted by restaurants due to food safety laws ("How to Start a Retail Food Business"). They must also be aware of all local sanitation regulations. The lack of regulations, however, is linked to the growth of the industry (Odendahl 2012). Vending laws also play an important role: when and where can your truck operate? Your location influences this a lot. Liz Leslie (2013) used Indianapolis as an example of how regulations affect the food truck business: “Two years ago, a city ordinance threatened the thriving food truck scene by banning vendors from selling food between 10 p.m. 6:00. Since the initial commotion, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard has largely been on the food trucks' side. Now, with its low regulation, Indianapolis is seen as a welcoming city for food trucks, compared to other cities with heavier regulation like Chicago or New York. “One natural regulation that is out of anyone's control is the weather (Gaur 2013). Rain, snow, and tornadoes can limit opening times and the number of consumers who will choose you over an indoor option. The weather can also be used to your advantage, like an ice cream truck on a hot summer day. Because they are like any other small business, they have to pay taxes, insurance on the truck and equipment, and any licensing fees (Jacobs is). a fairly popular food truck serving a variety of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches on Facebook the Big Cheese has 1,870 likes and updates locations, hours and menu changes almost daily. ... middle of paper......, 2014, from http://indianapublicmedia.org/eartheaters/food-trucks-coast-coast/Odendahl, M.
