In this court sit the highest and most respectable judges. The Supreme Court has the ability to actually decide appeals on each individual case brought to federal court. You can also appeal cases that have been brought to state courts but involve federal law. After circuit courts or state supreme courts issue a final ruling on a case, each person can decide whether they want to appeal to the Supreme Court. Many people file something known as a writ of certiorari. The writ of certiorari is in layman's terms a person asking that his case be sent to a higher judicial system for better review.
