Careers in Human Services Career options in the human services field are many and vary widely not only in terms of education requirements, job duties, and salary, but also in terms of the populations to which services are provided. By discussing 5 different careers that cross areas and populations we will demonstrate how diverse this career field is, along with how narrow a focus these careers can have. Substance Abuse Counselor My interest in substance abuse and the recovery process was why I chose this role in the human services field. I would be interested in working with clients who abuse substances, because I have a friend who is an alcoholic and drug addict. My friend and I talked about her addictions and the challenges she faced trying to detox and maintain recovery. The challenge in choosing this area of ​​human services would be the fact that many clients will relapse and have to start over.
