Topic > No Child Left Behind Act - 1733

A wide variety of issues, locally and nationally, are impacting education and will continue to impact education until these issues are addressed and resolved. Overcrowded classrooms, supply shortages, low teacher salaries, dilapidated buildings, and high use of substitute teachers are just some of the problems that have affected many schools across the nation. While some of these problems have been resolved, many still remain. These issues are determined by the location of the school and the type of school, private, public or charter. Current educational issues that will affect my teaching, based on my beliefs, involve the No Child Left Behind Act, time management, lack of flexibility, school budget cuts, technology, and bullying. In effect since 2001, The No Child Left Behind A law has been proposed to nationwide test all children under the same conditions and with the same test every year in order to prevent students from being trapped in a failing school. However, the focus on these mandatory tests has taken the teaching of reading and math to a whole new level. Because the curriculum focuses mostly on reading and mathematics, scores have increased across the nation, but a large gap still exists among students (Jennings & Rentner, 2006). Those who are smart prove to be smarter, but those students who struggle, still seem to struggle. Mere memorization of facts taught under these conditions will have a long-term negative effect on students as they enter high school, college, and their future endeavors. The benefits of the No Child Left Behind Act are currently under discussion. This law raises concerns because it will affect me as a teacher and how I teach in the next...halfway through the assignment......it will affect my teaching by not dedicating adequate time to teaching subjects outside of reading and math . Time management and lack of flexibility will affect me by not allowing me to fully exploit my creativity nor give my students the individual attention they deserve. School budgets will affect my teaching positively or negatively depending on whether my district is funded or cut. Technology will influence my teaching in a positive way by allowing students to use computers and other tools to actively participate, make choices, and perform skills in the classroom. Ultimately, bullying will affect my teaching by making me take responsibility for preventing these events. While these issues may come and go, or remain permanently, as an educator I will not let them stop me from giving my students the opportunity for a well-rounded education.
