Also uses the extended metaphor that the sun is life, then the sunset, and then the darkness is death. However in "On my first Sonne" the extended metaphor used throughout the poem is contrary to that in "Do no go Gentle". In “On My First Son” the metaphor symbolizes that his son was loaned to him by God and that every day spent with his son was a day more than he was owed. Both poets use nostalgia to present different ideas, Thomas uses the idea that death is coming, "Grave men, close to death" while Jonson uses the contrasting idea that death has already come and taken his son, " Farewell, son of my right hand." '. They both show their feelings towards the family, as neither of them wants to lose it since their attachment is so strong. Jonson focuses on the theme of pain, to overcome the loss of his son, while Thomas focuses on the theme of desperation, to not let go of his father.
