Whether native or foreign, the forced laborers discussed in the five historical documents: "A True and Exact History of the Island of Barbado", "Description of a Slave Market in Rio de Janeiro,” “Notes on the Treatment of Natives in North-Eastern Siberia,” “Mercury Mining at Huanacavelica and Silver Mining at Potosí,” and “General Slavery at Achin” – were pushed to take on responsibility and to lead a believable life. unnatural, as workers forced to work were typically exposed to extreme and destitute living conditions due to the mandatory demands of their overseer, while those “slaves” in the country of Sumatra were granted extensive independence. compared to drudge workers in other parts of the world, depending on their geographic location, some forced laborers shared a similar governance style, while others faced starkly contrasting lifestyles. As part of the Atlantic chattel slavery system, Ligon explained the harsh lifestyle and living conditions that the autonomous society imposed on its workers. workers in 17th century Barbados through his written description in "A True and Exact History of the Island of Barbadoes". According to Ligon, “the grueling work…during the harvest season went on nonstop from Monday at 1 a.m. until Saturday night” (Richard Ligon 114). Any educated reader could deduce that forced labor has created an extreme and highly unreasonable lifestyle, unnatural for any human being. Living conditions included meager meals, where “the servants [ate] no flesh of bone, unless an ox died, and then they feasted while it lasted. And until they had planted good plane trees, the Negroes were fed food that gave them much discontent, “and the quarters were… middle of paper… houses, as if they were free people” (Captain William Dampier 142). Compared to the rigid and intolerant modes of forced labor discussed above, Sumatran slavery appeared significantly more permissive, allowing workers to act more freely and independently. Whether natives or foreigners to the lands where slaves were forced to work, the good majority of forced laborers were forced by their overseer to face extreme conditions and perform unnatural tasks. Experiencing intense conditions of destitution and responsibility was an important part of the lives of most forced laborers, but for the rare extreme cases, slaves had a more significant amount of freedom. Although typical slave peoples faced similar governance dominance and autonomy, there were others who experimented with different lifestyles. This definitely creates worlds together, but worlds apart.
