Pecola finds herself isolated on the edge of the city, lost in her own world of madness as she loses touch with reality. She realizes that no matter how much she tries to change her physical appearance, she is never appreciated. She lacks the confidence that a young woman deserves to have. Someone with a mind of lust interrupts her life and this automatically changes everyone's perspective on her from worse to worse. Is it his fault or is it a question that remains unanswered? Back then, beauty was the true definition of perfection and simply being white. The Breedloves believe they deserve to be poor and have pushed their ugliness outward into the world. They were convinced that they were black and ugly, that society was inclined to consider them ugly, which leads to Pecola's low self-esteem. “It had occurred to Pecola some time ago that if her eyes… had been different, that is, beautiful, she herself would have been different” (Claudia 46). “In equating physical beauty with virtue, she (Pauline) has stripped her mind, tied it up, and gathered her self-loathing into a heap. He forgot lust and simple care” (Claudia 22). Being surrounded by a house of negativity, like Pauline's thoughts, made Pecola want to feel loved and beautiful. She responds to her family life by wanting to transcend it physically. Love, it's just a word that isn't shown that often. It was everything a little girl had ever dreamed of, just the feeling of being loved. “Love is never better than the lover. The wicked love wickedly, the violent love violently, the weak love weakly, the stupid love stupidly, but the love of a free man is never safe” (Claudia 206). How is it possible to feel so invaded by your own blood, by your own father? ...... half of the card ...... ace” (Claudia 19). He loved Shirley's temple so much until he longed to be like her. “We knew she was fond of Shirley Temple's cup and took every opportunity to drink her milk just to touch and see Shirley's sweet face” (Claudia 23). A doll, a mindset, an imagination, the moment Pecola laid eyes on that doll, she knew exactly what she wanted. You should never neglect a person. You never know what's on their mind. A couple of weeks ago, a young teenager took his own life. Take time to talk to someone. Make them feel like they are not worthless and like they are someone. Communication is the key to all things. It's what brings distant people together even more than before. A person could have so many things bottled up in their mind and never have anyone to share them with. A simple conversation with another individual can make everything right.
