Joyce describes him as: “The tone of his voice was not encouraging; it seemed as if he had spoken to me out of a sense of duty. I looked humbly at the great jars that stood like oriental guards on either side of the dark entrance to the stall” (Joyce 553). The stalls felt dark and alien, and also had an uninviting presence. The boy expected a positive experience but noticed that the lady and two men at the counter spoke with English accents.
