As a reader I understand the form and roles of this novel. Lynching symbolism is the practice of representing things and attaching symbolic meanings or any meaning to many different relationships, situations, and events that may occur. A literal form of lynching is to conform and state the obvious in every situation. The literal can be expressed, and that is what this novel represents. Between the FBI trying to deal with all the lynchings and having the federal government cases represented by civil rights. The novel reads, "I did everything I could to try to find out who was involved in the lynching," says Mattie Louise. Mattie Louise was a sweet-hearted woman who wanted peace. Also in the novel he says “You must forgive”. (240) Despite the strategies you must forgive and move on with your life even if something is resolved or unresolved. It also pushes you to live life to every extent because you never know what might happen on any given day. Why should you live your life unhappy? Lynching in the South was certainly remembered, although civil rights legislators were held responsible for the ongoing lynchings and torture, perhaps there could be a solution.
