Topic > Rwandan Genocide: What Really Happened - 646

Murder is never a good way to solve a problem, especially when a dictator kills people for no reason or just for a rumor or an idea. This is exactly what happened with the Rwandan genocide. The Hutus massacred the East African Tutsi tribe because the Tutsis held most of the leadership roles when the Europeans took control of Rwanda (Rosenburg). And, of course, the Hutus didn't like this at all, so they began to massacre the Tutsi tribe of Rwanda en masse. The Tutsis were simply humble cattle herders randomly chosen to take on leadership roles in place of the Hutu (Rosenburg). The Rwandan genocide was a terrible event in the history of our world. Over the course of 100 days, from April 6 to July 16, 1994, 800,000 to 1 million Tutsis and some moderate Hutus were massacred in the Rwandan genocide (United Human Rights Council). However, “the Hutu and the Tutsi are two peoples who share a common past (Rosenburg). When Rwanda was first colonized, the people who lived there raised livestock (Rosenburg). Soon, the people who owned the most livestock were called "Tutsi" and everyone else was called "Hutu". At that time, a person could easily change categories through marriage or the acquisition of livestock” (Rosenburg). So, as you can see, the Hutu and Tutsi lived a rather peaceful life together. Then Europeans invaded the peaceful tribes of Rwanda and eventually turned Rwandans against each other. Due to poverty, more than half of the surviving children dropped out of school (Rwandan genocide). 40,000 survivors are still without shelter, many of them whose homes were destroyed during the genocide (Rwandan Genocide). 7 out of 10 survivors earn a monthly income of less than 5,000 Rwandan francs (equivalent to 8 US dollars) (The Rwandan genocide... in the center of the paper... they are just on the streets.
