The armature flux superimposes the flux of the primary or main field and, henceforth, aggravates the flux of the fundamental field ( as it appears in the third figure of the image above). This impact is called armature reaction in DC motors. The negative effects of armature reaction The effect of armature reaction is well illustrated in the following figure 1) The armature response debilitates the main flow. If a DC generator were to occur, the weakening of the fundamental flux decreases the voltage produced.2) The armature response mutilates the fundamental flux, subsequently the position of the MNA is moved (the MNA is opposite the streamlines of the flux fundamental). Brushes should be set to MNA, otherwise you will be prompted to start from the surface of the brushes. Therefore, due to the armature response, it is difficult to decide the precise position of MNA3) For a loaded DC generator, MNA will be moved towards the pin (rotation direction).
