Although he seems to support the Communist Party here, he also points out its flaws as to why it was so easy for the US government to do so much damage to it without much effort a struggle. Shrecker states that Communist Party members did not appear to be victims, but rather stubborn, impractical idealists. When it comes to McCarthyism and its effects on the future, Schrecker really goes for the neck. He claims that McCarthyism in the short term destroyed the lives of thousands of innocent people, whether they lost their jobs, careers, or even their lives. However, he also says that the effect was not just on communists, but on anyone working in teaching, especially university professors, who were forced to really control themselves and limit everything they said to protect themselves from potential persecution. Beyond that, Schrecker believes that McCarthyism had a serious and lasting effect on American politics as a whole. He not only thinks that this has ruined the liberal side, but that due to the unethical methodology used by all types of organizations, this has led to more serious events occurring in the future.
