I. SubjectThe Hobbit is a novel about the adventures of a hobbit as he embarks on an unexpected adventure. The story begins by describing a humble hobbit located in a world full of magic and where mysterious creatures flourished. The house belonged to the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo, the protagonist of the story, has lived a simple and happy life and would not like to change anything. He feared anything unexpected; when a wizard named Gandalf came looking for someone to go on an adventure with, Bilbo did everything he could to avoid joining. Unfortunately for him he found himself traveling with thirteen dwarves and a wizard in search of treasure stolen by a ferocious dragon. Towards the beginning of their journey, Bilbo was quite vulnerable to danger and was often saved by others. As he progressed on his quest, he embarked on his own little adventures that helped him become braver and wiser. He found the One Ring of Power which made him invisible; it was of great use to the dwarves and especially to Bilbo since they were in danger. Gandalf had to leave the group halfway through the quest and the dwarves feared that they would not get far without him, but Bilbo was of great help to the dwarves as they progressed on their journey. He earned the respect of others through his courageous feats of heroism. The group finally reached the dragon's lair on a mountain known as the Misty Mountains. They had successfully recaptured the treasures, but rumors of the dead dragon's treasure attracted creatures from all the lands to head for the mountain. This led to a war known as the Battle of the Five Armies in which dwarves, elves, and humans fought against goblins and wargs. Bilbo did not participate... in the middle of the paper... it is set in a non-existent and unreal world or it concerns incredible and unreal characters... or it can be employed simply for whimsical entertainment, or it could be the means of serious commentary on reality ” (Harmon 192). The Hobbit is set in a fictional world with fictional events, objects and characters, but there are things that a person can relate to in reality. Bilbo is a hobbit who is obviously a fictional creature, but who, nevertheless, has realistic traits that a person in reality could also have. A subgenre of this novel is the psychological novel. “[It] usually [emphasizes] internal characterization and the motivations, circumstances, and internal action that arise from and develop external action” (382). Bilbo grows physically and mentally during his adventure. Tolkien focuses on Bilbo's journey of maturation and how he changes in the end.
