Topic > Tongues have two sides - 1148

Just as every coin has two sides, so does the tongue. For every negative there is a positive; for every failure, a success. Language plays an extremely important role in life, it has a great impact and opens up a new perspective. On the other hand, language also creates big problems in society, such as stereotypes. Language influences people's lives, leading to positive and negative outcomes. What would life be like if you were born without the ability to understand language or speak? How would you interact with others and society and express your feelings? Would it be different if you lived in a world where you couldn't read or write? Language greatly influences those who have difficulty understanding it; because it helps shape your thinking and opens up a new perspective. It means that when you learn a new language, you are not simply learning a new way of speaking, but you are also inadvertently learning a new way of thinking. Language provides the ability to communicate with others, share feelings and stay connected. Drawing on Helen Keller's personal account, "The Day Language Came into My Life," she explains how her existence was secluded "in a thick fog" (72). Keller has been blind and deaf since she was 18 months old, her life seemed meaningless before language entered her life. He didn't know a single letter of the alphabet and, therefore, has no way to connect with the things in life, his family, or even the world. Mrs. Sullivan, Keller's teacher, introduced Keller to the world of language by patiently teaching her how to write each word with her hands. Keller came to understand language over time and learned that "everything had a name, and each name gave rise to a new thought" (74). For example, if you think about the word appl… middle of paper… it is already assimilated into American society. Furthermore, if an American does not know how to pronounce a person's foreign name, he or she tends to try his or her best to pronounce that person's name even if it is incorrect. Although many foreign immigrants would consider such action as a form of prejudice or discrimination, in this case, as Firoozed Dumas did. Language does not always take one side, as it can open a new perspective by providing some people with the ability to communicate and express their feelings to stay connected to family or society. However, it can also have a severe impact on a person with learning difficulties, taking away their confidence. At the same time, the use of language also creates discrimination and stereotypes in society. Overall, language has the power to influence a person's life, both positively and negatively.
