For example, in southern India, relatives sometimes silently kill their elders, young people who are very ill, or when the family can no longer afford to care for or feed the sick through a practice called thalaikoothal (Magnier, 2013). The practice is implemented by setting a date of death, family members are asked to say goodbye and often to participate (Magnier, 2013). The terminally ill patient is given an oil bath, a head massage with cold water (to lower body temperature), and an extremely large amount of green coconut milk, which leads to death (Magnier, 2013). Some victims are killed by an act called milk therapy (Magnier, 2013). Fatal breathing difficulties occur when terminally ill patients are force-fed cow's milk and have their noses stuffed shut (Magnier, 2013).
