Cheeky Chaucer“An Analysis of Chaucer's Characters”Chaucer's prologue is an introduction to the characters he will soon discuss in his stories. It was written to fight the Italian Buchartio and write his own version to achieve fame. The reason why the Italian version became so popular was because it was written in the Italian of the street people, in other words it could be understood by all of Italy, not just the rich. Chaucer wanted to do the same thing, but stopped when he was deciding what language to write it in, he thought about Russian and other languages, but soon decided on English. This is extremely important because it is the first time English is written, usually it is just a spoken language with no written form. This is why the English language was so important that he wrote it specifically in English. Giving the language a written form, in a sense. It was a mixture of East German and the native language of the Anglo-Saxons. It's difficult to read, because this is the first time English has been written, so there was no set way to write the words, and they were written as they sounded phonetically." March penetrated to the root and soaked every vein with good liquor” (Page 97 lines 1-3). Typically, this meant that the same word was written fifty different ways throughout the entire Prologue, but it is still an excellent story, with characters very deep, which are fully developed and provide further detail to the story and make it one of the best stories in English there are today. Initially, my first Favorite character from Chaucer's Prologue was... middle of paper... that when the song was sung he should preach and chant his sweet tongue and (well, he might) win silver from the audience” (Page 690-696 and 731-733) this is exactly the way people today they do things only for themselves, not for others around them. This is one of the things that Chaucer emphasizes in his stories, that only greed and other selfish acts will lead to the destruction of humanity. The characters in Chaucer's Prologue are very well developed characters in their own right, he goes very far into the depth of character which only enhances his story, making it one of the most popular in the English language. Whether it's the characters, the Pardoner, the Nun or the rich Monk, it all expresses things about people that need to be changed in society, which I completely agree with.
