The lake in the Quilotoa crater, is located in the loop known as Quilotoa, and is just 14 kilometers below the village of Zumbahua. Quilotoa is a small village that seems to be particularly touristy and attracts the spectacular crater lake. The crater lake is simply gorgeous. The deep blue waters can be seen, as you peer over the crater rim and look down at the steep walls, which drop 400 meters to the lake. Quilotoa Lagoon, located in the volcano's crater, has an interesting geological history. Ten thousand years ago the volcano erupted violently, sending a huge pyroclastic flow up the volcano's slopes. The effects of water and wind on the rubble from the eruption created the white walls that can be seen in river canyons and mountains in the vicinity of the volcano. The Quilotoa eruption (800 BC) was an explosive event on a larger scale than previously believed in pre-Columbian Ecuador. During this event, ash traveled hundreds of kilometers north of Quito. These layers of ash have provided interesting clues for archaeologists and geologists in Ecuador about life in the past
