Most people who smoke don't realize that when you inhale tobacco smoke you are literally poisoning your body. People don't think about the fact that tobacco is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Parents who smoke don't realize the impact smoking has on their children. Most children want to grow up to be just like their mother or father and if the mother or father smokes, there is a greater chance that the child will become a smoker in the future. Many teenagers start smoking tobacco because of the attention they receive from others. Most teens don't think about how smoking and using other tobacco products could lead to life-threatening illnesses or death. Adolescents like to get attention, no matter if it is good attention or bad attention (Home Intervention System 1). Adolescents need attention and by smoking they get a lot of it (Home Intervention System 1). Adolescents like to behave as if they are special or dangerous people (Home Intervention System 1). When teenagers smoke they feel like they are noticed by others as if they are interesting people. These types of behaviors attract attention because smoking initiation is influenced by the presence of a close friend or parent who smokes (Home Intervention System 2). When teenagers smoke they think that others are looking at them thinking that they want to be like them, so they don't think that even the smell of cigarette smoke is attractive to most people. Teens think that if they do what their friends do they will fit in, so if their friends smoke they will most likely try it. The problem is that when they take their first hit, they can become addicted (Home Intervention System 1).
