Promoting foreign language instruction in American primary schools is vital to children's learning process, cultural awareness, and future work. Although they are scarce, there are some elementary schools in the United States that incorporate foreign language courses into the curriculum. This is more common in areas bordering other countries and in relation to the language spoken, as French is taught more often along the Canadian border and Spanish along the Mexican border. The process of learning another language is beneficial to the process of learning all subjects because the methods used combine teaching procedures found in each classroom. The broad learning ability acquired by learning a foreign language and the ability to converse with other people also helps people in their careers, making them suitable for any profession. Special schools have been created to promote a culturally mixed learning environment, such as charter schools and bilingual schools. Students who attend these specialized schools are exposed to different lifestyles from an early age, ideal for absorbing new information and living successfully in two opposing cultures. Teaching foreign languages in primary school is necessary because the years spent in primary school are those in which children are most susceptible to acquiring new information. The benefits of learning a second language are vast and measurable in numerous ways. As Lynn Redmond, executive secretary of the National Network for Early Language Learning and director of the Department of Foreign Languages and associate professor of education at Wake Forest University, states, "Children should begin learning a foreign language in kindergarten and continue through high school ... .... middle of paper ......l.
