Determinism states that a person is “completely and inevitably influenced, shaped, and controlled by his or her surroundings” (p. 65). Followers of this idea feel that there is always a situation that could limit or control their actions. However, Frankl is completely against the theory of determinism. Followers of the idea of determinism believe that people will always be conditioned to be free or to have true human freedom. To counter this, Frankl asks “is there no spiritual freedom regarding behavior and reaction to a given environment?” (Page 65). Frankl believes that people have the spiritual and emotional freedom to choose whatever they want to do. In Frankl's situation he has no physical freedom. He is severely mistreated and deprived of his natural human freedoms, yet no one, not even the Nazis, could take Frankl's spiritual freedom and attitude. Frankl believes that the attitude of choosing apathy, in his case giving up food and offering it to those who suffer, allows him to overcome the problem of attitude towards different situations for a better life.
