Topic > The Power of Humility: John's Grapes of Wrath...

During the Great Depression many people suffered from hunger and poverty, you can imagine not being able to eat for days on end and not only that, but imagine having to suffer because of the sand that wipes out all your crops and destroys your house. It was like this back then, people suffered from hunger and sandstorms destroyed everything in their path. John Steinbeck, a very well known writer and the creator of "The Grapes of Wrath", is very well known for writing books during the great depression where he liked to write about the poor, the homeless and the misfits. Humility is described very well in the book “The Grapes of Wrath” because it tells of a man trying to take care of his children with the little money he has while also trying to get to California. In the story, the man's humility changes the waitress' behavior because she feels sympathy towards the man even though he was a stereotype at the beginning. When the man first approached the dinner, the waitress thought he was like everyone else suffering from the great depression just trying to get free things from people. At first the man approached the dinner humbly, asking to buy a loaf of bread. Immediately the waitress Mae, being a stereotype and thinking that he was trying to deceive her, said that the bread was only for making sandwiches. In response the man says that he needs bread to feed his children because it is a long way to go to California. The waitress then tells him that if they sell bread they will go make sandwiches. The man then tells her that he is hungry but needs to earn a penny to give to his entire family. This leads Mae to change her reaction and change her mind because she is starting to feel more and more sympathy for......middle of paper......at first she doesn't like the man and towards the end she really feels I feel sorry for the man and try to help out. Mae changes differently in the story, like when the chef was mixing the potato salad and said give it to her and she looked at the trucks as if to tell them what she had to do next. Another example is when the man asked her for some penny candy that might have been more expensive than that, she offered to give him 2 for a penny because she didn't want the man to disappoint her two children who were anxious to taste the sweets. With this kind of humility the man is able to get food for his family and not rob someone in the process. What I believe about humility is that you need self-esteem and that humility comes from a deep belief in who you are and what you are capable of and also requires the courage to stand back when you might stand out.
