In rock music its target audience is young people. And by youth I am not referring to adolescents, but rather to the mentality of young people, adults and adolescents still in the sociological stage between being a "child" and accepting the responsibilities of "adulthood" [Weinstein pg6] These young people negotiate gender and change it to their liking. For example, both males and females have different rock subgenres aimed specifically at them. Males are seen from a young age as bad and boisterous, not very responsible and therefore endowed with greater freedom. While girls are seen as calm and polite, with very low aggression. These traits were reflected in gender-targeted genres. Males were targeted with Heavy Metal as it expressed the qualities they will have to give up to become adults and how they will lose their freedom. While rock music is sweet and romantic for women, females typically grow up faster than males and leave their youth behind to take on responsibilities. An example of how music was negotiated to suit both sexes can be found in the 1960s, when artists such as Carole King and James Taylor transformed protest themes into sentimental commentary, romance, and youthful illusions. [Weinstein p. 12-13] While heavy metal bands like Black Sabbath sang about politicians and how disgusting they are because they exploit young people in the name of greed, as shown in the song Wicked World. This very characteristic of rock created by young people for young people is still alive today, for example during the 2004 presidential election Green Day released American Idiot. The song was about how the media and politics are brainwashing Americans to remove their individuality. The singer wanted to warn America about this and prevent them from turning into 'idiots' and
