Topic > West and Zimmerman's Doing Gender - 725

Many people relate sex, gender, and sexual orientation as the same thing grouped into two categories of masculine or feminine traits and preferences, however, as both authors argue , it is imperative to consider each as a separate and ever-evolving category in order to protect the beliefs of people who contradict the previous statement. “Educating legislators and politicians about the harms inflicted by sexism and gender stereotypes is a critical component to achieving protection of basic civil rights for GLBT people.” (Currah, Minter p.9) Many members of the LGBT population feel that their personal freedoms have been violated as legislators in some states and countries violate their personal rights. Passing legislation that marginalizes the LGBT population is not only unjust and inhumane, but causes sociological and social implications that call into question people's beliefs about themselves, leading to the dangerous climate the group faces from within of themselves and the surrounding population.
