Acai BerriesFor many years, dieters have called Acai berries a super fruit. Many diet pill companies have touted the health benefits of acai due to its rich antioxidant content. Unfortunately, popular weight loss claims surrounding this berry are unfounded. There is little scientific research to support false and exaggerated claims made by diet pill manufacturers. General Information Acai berries share a similar appearance with grapes and are native to Central and South America. Intense purple in color, the berries constitute a staple food in the diet of Amazonian populations. In the United States, Brazilian acai berries are often consumed in the form of pills and drinks and are commonly taken as a dietary supplement. Ingredients Acai berries are rich in nutrients and contain large amounts of vitamins and minerals. They are also rich in antioxidants, useful for strengthening the immune system and fighting the aging process. These berries also contain protein, fiber and omega fatty acids. Brand Name Variations As a dietary supplement, the acai berry is often listed on nutrition labels under its common name. Its scientific name, Euterpe oleracea, is occasionally used. Acai can be found in powder, liquid, tea and pill supplements. Mechanism of Action Diet pill companies claim that acai helps you lose weight due to its high content of antioxidants and omega fatty acids. Berries are said to burn fat while protecting the body from free radicals. The high fiber content found in acai also helps cleanse and detoxify the system. Unfortunately, many of acai's weight loss claims have very little scientific evidence to back them up. Verifiable Evidence of Acai's Effect... middle of paper... berries are relatively safe for anyone without pollen allergies or berry sensitivities. The real dangers are the additives and other ingredients added to food supplements containing acai. Due to the difficulty of transportation, diet pills often contain negligible amounts of acai berries. Supplements are sometimes laced with fillers such as sugar and other calorie-rich additives. Although diet pill companies have long touted the benefits of acai berries, little to no scientific evidence supports these claims. While it's true that a diet rich in antioxidants can promote good health, there's nothing in acai berries that can't be found elsewhere. The only proven way to lose weight is portion control, a balanced diet and exercise. No magic pill or miracle fruit will replace the hard work and effort it takes to lose weight.
