Dialects, idioms, slang and pronunciation of the American language There are hundreds of regional dialects within the same language. These dialects reflect the daily experience of people living in different parts of the country and shape their cultural identity. Someone from Pittsburgh sounds very different than someone from Texas, and if they talk to each other, they'll have a good idea of where each other is from. The type of English spoken in the United States is commonly known as American English (Delaney). Various dialects are the result of historical, geographical and social factors. There is a notable range of linguistic diversity within each of the different dialect speech communities, with individual speakers varying their speech. We all speak with an accent and we all speak a dialect, these include both the standard English dialect and non-standard modern dialects. (Delaney) There are variations in accents depending on the age, gender, ethnicity, and social and educational background of the speaker. Dialect describes a linguistic variety in which a user's regional or social background appears in a person's use of vocabulary and grammar. Much of dialect has to do with the native language spoken, where it comes from, where it lives, who it hangs out with and how it spends its free time. These are just some of the ways the dialect has been influenced. We tend to be more welcoming to ethnic diversity in our country, however, when it comes to academic writing, a language barrier is placed. Students are not encouraged to write in their chosen dialect, but are expected to use standard written English. Language varies in different regions, because people have different access... to the center of the card... where a person is from and what dialect they were raised to speak. Another example is the refrigerator, some people call it a refrigerator or icebox. There are many other examples of words that can be pronounced and interpreted differently, it all depends on the region you live in and the customs of that area. All in all the primary social function of any dialect or any language is communication. Language plays a very vital role in human society. The language of any human society says a lot about that particular society. Therefore, it can be further emphasized that language and communication are inseparable. Dialect plays an extremely important role in our American culture and will continue to evolve and change as time goes on. One thing is certain: in our culture we will always have a wide variety of dialects and speeches.
