The book The Matter of the Classroom shows the importance of how much people should value and appreciate the importance of classroom education. How much you dedicate yourself to school can help you gain enough knowledge to succeed in the future. Having a good quality education in America seems to be the closest thing to a ticket to class mobility. The book was very interesting in explaining what social class really is in America and how it affects people's lives in how they live day to day. Different types of social classes are what shape our society. But I think this book is more for those people who are not so aware of social class, or for those who feel that we live in a classless society, rather than for people who have realized the consequences that class actually has on social life . someone's life. Many people can relate to the stories told in the book, if not, they know a person who can relate to these stories. As someone who grew up lower class, I can definitely relate to most of the stories told in this book. In my experience, there is a big difference in this country between the rich, the middle class and the very poor that we see on a daily basis. Even those who belong to the so-called working class have to make constant sacrifices and live very differently from those who are firmly placed in the middle class. Some people may have decent jobs, but bills and other expenses might make things more difficult for people than those who are in the same class but don't necessarily face the same things as others. The chapters I read in this book expand on what I said for a better and clearer understanding. In Chapter 6, “The Dropout Boom,” he talked about the idea of how higher education, aka college… middle of the paper. .....as big as they were they needed a house big enough. Even though Kathy Link is a Relo, there are other Relos out there that are much worse. These people feel that if they earn a certain amount of money, for example by being from the upper class, they do not feel the need for people from the lower classes to associate with them. People tune into having money and having a high status in society gives people the idea that having money and living in extravagant houses is normal. They think it's the only way to live and don't see how other people don't live the same way. That said, there is a lot of disorganization in society which increases the level of deviance. The acts of deviant people challenge the boundaries of society and can eventually spread to the masses, changing those boundaries. Deviance helps us affirm and define our norms.
