Topic > Dell Theory and the Human Cost - 1027

Thomas Friedman noted that two nations with a McDonald's franchise have never gone to war with each other. Developing countries do not want to risk the loss of multinational companies venturing into their markets and including them in their global supply chain. Even if there are no certain data and war is still possible, economic globalization acts as a powerful preventive tool. While this theory seems like a foolproof concept, there is still an outstanding question regarding who manufactures the products in the middle of the supply chain. Workers are forced to work long hours in horrible conditions for next to nothing. They live in cramped 3-bedroom hostels with twenty other people. With all these conditions that workers must endure, it begs the question of whether having a place in the supply chain really compares to the importance of life. The ethical dilemma arises regarding what is right and wrong. The benefits of being part of a supply chain do not equate to the benefits of being treated as human beings with rights. It's not fair but it seems like the only right option for those in the supply chain. Apple is an American multinational corporation, whose specialties include the design, development, and sale of consumer electronics. Foxconn is a multinational manufacturing company, also one of Apple's largest suppliers. Foxconn has recently come under intense scrutiny over how its workers are treated in its factories, particularly in China. China has become a hot spot for the employment of cheap labor. Foreign companies around the world, especially America, have profited enormously from China's cheap spending and the huge amount of labor it uses. Nature...... middle of paper ......l in everything that is done in life, things must be done fairly and the golden rule must be applied to all. With all the wars and conflicts going on in the world, finding a way to resolve it is the dream. When a way to prevent these conflicts presents itself, the best thing to do is to adopt it. Although there are many benefits that come from Conflict Prevention Theory, the benefits do not outweigh the consequences that will be felt in the end. These consequences may not affect the countries involved in the supply chain, but will affect others. In short, I believe that the benefits of being part of a supply chain do not equal the benefits of being treated as human beings with rights. If countries involved in the supply chain realize that their actions affect others in a negative way, then change will come and conflict prevention theory will be modified..
