A poor peer relationship can be seen as both a cause and a consequence of teen substance abuse. Developing in a negative and unhealthy environment can lead a person to make poor decisions, and making poor decisions can lead a person to build relationships with other individuals who share the same harmful practices as them and who do not provide positive peer support. Making a poor decision can lead to the young person becoming involved in deviant behavior because they are under the influence, affecting the person's judgment and increasing the chances of being involved in delinquent behavior.
