Topic > Symbolism of Metamorphosis - 1608

Kafka described Gregor as a “monstrous cockroach”. Cockroaches are the symbol of filth. Most people consider cockroaches to be an extremely disgusting pest. Of all the things to compare Gregor's transformation to, Kafka's use of a cockroach was simply incredible. The use of a cockroach was perfect because Gregor's family eventually considered it an annoying pest. There is a lot of symbolism and imagery in The Metamorphosis. Religion doesn't play a big role in the story, but honestly some religious elements are mentioned. Life is all about choices. If a person chooses society over himself, he loses his individuality. On the other hand, if it were the other way around and the person chose himself over society, society's support will be less.
