Topic > The Pros and Cons of Education - 1439

Studies have shown that home schools on average “achieve similar, if not better, academic outcomes.” (Wichers). “The Ohio Department of Education (1995) reported that students were administered a standardized achievement test” the scores were found to reveal that “homeschooled students averaged between 65 and 80 th percentile on standardized and normed achievement tests, where the national average was the 50th percentile” (Wichers). Testing aside, college acceptance isn't as difficult as some are led to believe. Kate McReynolds found that in Golden's research, “Stanford University admitted 27 percent of its homeschooled applicants in 2001, nearly double the acceptance rate of traditionally educated applicants” (Golden, cit. in McReynolds 37). This shows that a non-traditional approach to teaching is effective and in many cases more effective than other teaching methods
