Language change happens every day. New words are constantly added and new dialects are formed. People have always argued about the causes of language change and tried to control the changes that occurred, but in the end they achieved nothing. Languages change and spread because of the people who use them on a daily basis. African American English and California English are both examples of the different ways the language can change. People try to resist changes in their language because they don't want to see it change. Language change is a natural process that can be influenced by others but is never stopped. This course did a great job explaining how language change begins and spreads. Language change can be caused by numerous factors, including political and social changes. As societies evolve, pre-existing language is often replaced by a new, more popular one. Language change also happens due to time. Different people in a society use their language in ways that vary depending on age, gender, race, and economic and social class. When linguistic change is the result of major political and social changes, it can happen very quickly. Many of the examples studied in this course document the disappearance of languages from new political parties. Adult speakers are no longer allowed to speak publicly in their native language, and young speakers are taught a new language. If a language has no new speakers to use it, it will die with the silent elders. Subtle language changes that happen over time often go unnoticed until they become more mainstream. As this course has shown, people in a regional area can vary greatly in how they use their native language. Generational differences appear in the language across… middle of the paper… the fight against change will lose. As the world continues to grow, so will the languages that exist within it. Some languages may disappear as new ones form, but linguistic change will always happen. Language change is the result of interactions of people who speak it with speakers of other languages. African American English is an example of how different languages can come together to create a creole. Hollywood is an example of how languages can spread new words to other dialects within it. Every change meets resistance and the language is no different. People are afraid of change and don't want to see the perfect version of their language destroyed. No matter how much people fight linguistic change, it will happen anyway. Language change is a natural process that cannot be stopped. It can be altered and changed but no one can stop the natural evolution of languages.
