Abortion laws have changed over the years. Many people argue about abortion, putting its legal status in difficulty. In the early 1800s, the thought of abortion was absurd and it was illegal. People who support abortion are known as “pro-choice” and believe that women have the right to decide whether they want to terminate their pregnancy or not. Americans will have a better future if they encourage the legalization of abortion. Legalized abortion appears to be the reason crime rates have dropped by 50% in the United States. Crime rates began to decline a few years after the first legalization of abortion in 1970. The few states that passed the legalization of abortion first experienced declining crime rates before the rest of the world. States that had higher abortion rates in the 1980s had lower crime rates in the 1990s (Donohue & Levitt, Doc 2). If abortion is not legalized, doctors fear that pregnant women who do not want their babies will resort to illegal and unsafe abortions or simply resort to killing their baby themselves after birth (AbortionProCon, Doc 5). This will endanger both the child and the woman. Some prominent leaders support legal abortion. For example, the president of the United States, Barack Obama. President Obama is pro-abortion and pro-choice. Within 60 days of taking office he expressed his views on abortion. Even if Obama supports it, federal funds won't pay for abortion. It says states will use their own funds through their health programs to pay for abortions (Annas, Doc 6). Some states like North Dakota do not cover abortion services unless it is for rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother (Pickert, Doc 10). Obama... center of paper... Ricans will have a better future if they choose to legalize abortion. What do you think?
