Recognizing the emotions behind conflict requires that we identify the conflict, identify our fears, and identify our reactions. To achieve this, I completed an exercise that helped me identify my core fears. Once I completed the exercise, I found that my three core fears were rejected, I felt inadequate, and I felt like a failure. Before completing this exercise and actually seeing the words printed in the book, I had no idea that these were my conflict-related fears. I also found that my three main reactions to conflict were withdrawal, indifference, and defensiveness. I knew before this exercise that these three would be my reaction to conflict. I've never been good at resolving conflicts, but knowing my core fears should be a great stepping stone to turning the tables and learning to resolve conflicts without running away from them. During this course I learned that I must learn to relate to my emotions.
