Authors Nancy Signorielli, Douglas McLeod, and Elaine Healy have written about the negative impacts that commercials appearing on MTV have on younger generations. According to Signorielli, McLeod, and Healy, it gives children conflicting views about gender roles and even responsibilities (91). I think these effects on society are starting to become commonplace and more and more people are starting to accept it. Men are taught from an early age how to behave and how to treat women. The ads are seen continuously throughout the day and some may give these kids different opinions on manners and obligations. Women are also taught how to behave, and advertisements that use gender roles can give girls a dependent perspective. Young women believe that their happiness is obsolete unless a man likes them except their looks. Although commercials and magazine ads are used to promote a product and help the company, the strategies used can be harmful. Gender stereotypes in advertising can lead young children to believe they have to look and act a certain way. In turn, advertisements can cause health problems and low self-esteem. Almost all people want to be accepted and advertisements should focus more on the products rather than manipulating men and women into buying the products. Every year men and women are becoming more equal, but some advertisements may cause a delay in that progress. Once advertisements use a different marketing strategy, the inequality between men and women will not change
