IntroductionThe term refugee has been used a lot lately in the news and other media. As Americans, when we hear or think of a refugee, we always think of others. We think of the lost Syrians and the children of war in Africa, we think of the refugees from Afghanistan and those who emigrate here from the Middle East fearing persecution by their oppressed governments; we hardly think of this term in association with an American. We are not responsible for the fact that the strongest nations have fallen, their territory conquered, their infrastructure destroyed and their population displaced; such faith can occur in America. Would an American passport still be strong and grant us access to another country, would our currency remain strong or would we have to rely on the mercy and hospitality of another nation, to protect and care for us in our most vulnerable state? According to the 1951 Refugee Convention, a refugee is someone who, having "well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality". , and is unable, or because of such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country” (Refugee Convention, 1951). In the scenario envisaged for this essay; those who flee to Mexico from Los Angeles in fear for their lives – especially those who do not have dual citizenship with the ability to return to their future country – will become refugees of Mexico. The host country, after granting entry to refugees from Los Angeles, will become (under International Refugee Law) responsible for providing accommodation, protection and other needs that we refugees may have (Jastram & Ach..... . half of the document ...... http://www.ipu.org/pdf/publications/refugee_en.pdfCircle of Rights (2000). http://www1.umn.edu/humanrts/edumat/IHRIP/circle/modules/module7.htmKurg, H., WHO, & Point, H. a (2002) 25 questions and answers on health and human rights. .
