Topic > Architecture: Daniel Libeskind and Aldo Rossi - 1205

“I believe that the idea of totality, of the purpose of the masterplan, is misleading. One should support a gradual transformation of public space, a metamorphic process, without relying on a hypothetical future moment when everything will be perfect. The mistake of urban planners and architects is to believe that in fifty years Alexanderplatz will be perfected." –Daniel LibeskindIn the world of architecture, it is important to make your mark, but in a way that stands out from others. Unlike many things, architecture is very difficult to change. Having said this, how can the situation be changed? What do they have to do? Through research, I believe Daniel Libeskind and Aldo Rossi paved the way for change in modern architecture. Libeskind once stated: “…Everything that has been done can be undone. Everything that has been done can be improved. Here it is: the things that I believe are important architecture.” With this statement, both architects allowed their techniques and personalities to take part in their projects to innovate new and significant architecture. While what they do may be different, the way they approach their projects shares some similarities. Theories become an important aspect when dealing with the ways of Libeskind and Rossi. Aldo Rossi is another influential architect, recognized for his architectural designs and theories. His theory became quite interesting as he criticized the lack of understanding of the city in the field of architecture. He believes that a city should be studied as it is built over time. One of his first and well-known projects was the addition to the already existing cemetery in the city of Modena, in northern Italy. Aldo Rossi with...... middle of paper...... produced through power. It allows the city to manifest itself through its form. The idea of a political principle also develops when spaces begin to create conflicts. Although Daniel Libeskind and Aldo Rossi may have different techniques on how they design, they favor each other as they adopt certain principles to describe effective ways on how to come up with something functional and memorable for the community. Although Libeskind likes to focus on his culture and Rossi likes to remember aspects of a city, both bring efforts to link tradition, memory and communication. They try to change the way architecture is today so that, as the future arrives, buildings are able to adapt to changing things. Although change in architecture is quite difficult and sometimes impossible to achieve, I believe that these two men are definitely making an effort towards it.
